Answers to some common questions about travel to Cuba

What do the current changes that Obama is implementing mean for me?

Even though it is a lot easier to travel to Cuba, tourism is still illegal. For Americans to travel they need to fit under on of the approved categories of travel. Participants will have to verify that they are travelling under on of those guidelines.

If I do not want to travel under one of the licenses can I travel from another country? I have a friend who travelled from Mexico and another from Canada.

This is illegal. If you do this, it’s at your own risk. If caught by the US govt. you are liable for a $10,000 fine. Per OFAC regulations, ALL Americans with an American passport or permanent residency CANNOT travel to Cuba unless they are under one of the approved categories. Non-US residents have to ALSO abide by the US restrictions and guidelines IF travelling from within the US.

Can you explain what a People-to-People program is?

A People-to-People program is one in which there are meaningful exchanges with counterparts in Cuba. For example, a little league coach can take his team or players to Cuba, they would need to meet with other baseball players, visit historical baseball sites, play against other Cuban players. The point of P2P programs is to learn and exchange culture with Cubans.

Can we make a custom program that fits under the approved categories?

Yes, Marazul has many Cuban experts and consultants with years of experience in programming and with extensive connections in Cuba. We can make custom P2P and educational programs among others.

I heard commercial flights can now go?

No, there is no way of knowing when they will start operating. As of now charters are still the ONLY way for Americans to go and that is via charters under ONE of the 12 approved general licenses.

Can we sign up with cruises?

Some cruises have started to go. Some are approved by Cuba some are from the US. A lot have no gained authorization from both. It is very expensive and we are not exclusively working with anyone yet.

I heard we can use CC’s in Cuba now and ATM’s, is that true?

Yes, some credit cards and some banks are working with Cuba to establish a presence. However, we would still recommend a passenger to bring USD currency to exchange in Cuba for the CUC.

What is the difference between CUC and el Cuban Peso?

CUC is the currency that foreigners must use in order to exchange money. The Cuban public use the Cuban Peso as their daily currency.

Can I travel with an infant?

Under a P2P license no. However, other licenses do allow for this, for example a professional research license and family visits. Spouses and family can now accompany professionals to Cuba; they will not have to abide by any program, etc.
